Your Body Already Knows How to Heal - So Why Isn't It?
Your body is already remarkable
When you cut your finger, you don't have to figure out “how is my body going to heal this?” a little sore perhaps but within hours there's a scab and within days a scar is forming. That's your body doing exactly what it was designed to do, quietly, efficiently, without any help from your brain at all, isn't that remarkable?
Your body is always trying to find its way back to balance. It knows how to repair, how to restore, how to heal and the same incredible intelligence that closes a wound is exactly what gets to work when you come for a Bowen session. Because when your nervous system is calmed first, your body receives the treatment in the same way it receives that healing after a cut. It feels safe. It opens up. And that's when the deeper levels of healing can begin, whether that's a long standing shoulder problem, persistent back pain, or tension that's been there so long you've stopped noticing it.
So why isn't it working?
If your body is this capable, why does pain stick around and why do some things not shift, no matter what you try?
A big part of it comes down to something most of us have absorbed without even realising. The idea that harder means better. No pain no gain. Push through. Work harder and you'll get more results. It's so deeply woven into the way we think about health and healing that it can feel almost wrong to question it.
But here's what I see, when your body experiences pressure or force it isn't prepared for, without the right environment or explanation, it doesn't open up, it protects. The nervous system shifts into fight, flight or freeze, and in that state, healing simply isn't the priority. Getting through is. So even if a treatment feels intense, even if you leave feeling like something must have happened because you can certainly feel it, your body may not have actually settled at all. Intensity isn't the same as effectiveness and your body knows the difference.
You've tried so many things, so why isn't anything sticking?
If you've seen practitioner after practitioner and nothing has worked for long, it may simply mean it hasn't yet felt safe enough to fully let go.
A lot of approaches, however well-intentioned, work on the body. But Bowen is different as it works with it. The difference is subtle but it changes everything, the movements are small and there are pauses in between, not because nothing is happening, but because that's precisely when your nervous system is doing its work. Your body is taking it in, responding and beginning to unwind patterns it may have been holding for years.
As Bowen works with the nervous system, it doesn't have to address one thing at a time. It can hold the whole picture at once, your hip, your sleep, the tension you've been carrying in your shoulders for years. That's not magic, that’s just how the nervous system works and it's why people so often notice changes they weren't even expecting.
People come into my clinic for things like hip bursitis and mention a few sessions later that they're sleeping better. Or that they feel less rattled by things, more resilient, more like themselves. These shifts are real and they're quieter than pain relief, so they tend to go unnoticed.
The patterns that might be keeping you stuck
Something else I notice a lot is the patterns we carry, not just in how we hold tension, but in how we move through everyday life. The way you sit at your desk. How you sleep. The yoga pose that feels good in the moment but might be quietly aggravating something underneath. Our everyday lives invite certain patterns into the way we use our bodies, often without us ever noticing. So rather than trying to fix anything right now, I'd gently invite you to simply start becoming aware. How are you sitting? How do you move when you're not thinking about it? Awareness, it turns out, is often the first step.
So, what does your body actually need?
Your body isn't broken. It doesn't need more doing to it. It doesn't need more force, more intensity, or more pushing through. It just needs the right conditions, and a treatment that works with it rather than on it.
If you've been dealing with something that isn't quite shifting, or you're tired of approaches that feel like they're working against your body rather than with it, Bowen might be worth exploring. From what so many people describe, what they needed wasn't more treatment, it was a different kind.
I offer Bowen therapy sessions in Holt, Trimingham and Northrepps, and you're very welcome to get in touch if you'd like to ask any questions or see if it feels like the right fit for you.
